A kids' lamp does two jobs at once: it has to make bedtime feel safe, and it has to survive being loved. Here is what actually matters — from an atelier that prints lamps for a living.

1. Warm light, always

Look for 2700K warm white — the colour of candlelight and sunsets. Cool white (4000K and up) reads as "office" and works against winding down. Every lamp we ship comes with a warm-white LED bulb included, because it is the only colour temperature that belongs in a bedroom.

2. LED only — because of heat

Old incandescent bulbs turn most of their energy into heat; a curious hand on a hot shade is the classic kids'-room accident. A modern LED stays cool enough to touch even after hours. If a lamp you are considering takes E14 or E27 bulbs, fit it with an LED of up to 40W-equivalent and it will barely warm up.

3. A stable, grippable shape

Kids' rooms are kinetic. Look at the base: it should be flat, wide relative to the height, and the lamp should not mind being picked up. Sculptural lamps have an advantage here — a toadstool or a sitting bulldog is a compact solid object, not a stalk with a heavy head.

4. No glass, if you can avoid it

The bulb itself is glass — that is unavoidable — but the body of the lamp does not have to be. Our lamps are 3D-printed in PLA, a rigid plant-based plastic: if one goes over the edge of a shelf, you pick it up rather than sweep it up. The bulb sits recessed or shaded in most designs, away from straight-line reach.

5. The switch matters more than you think

An inline cord switch — a little clicker on the cable — means the lamp can be turned off without reaching under a shade or behind furniture. Position the cord so the switch lands near the pillow for older kids, or up out of reach for toddlers. All our lamps ship with a 2-metre cord and inline switch.

6. Choose a character, not just a light

This is the part the checklists skip. A lamp a child chose — the plumber mid-jump, a flying saucer on its own beam, a free elf holding the light, a small dragon — becomes part of the bedtime ritual instead of an appliance. The light gets turned on because they want to, and that is half the battle at 8 pm.
